So Nathan and I are planning on pooling our money and buying a new computer. I am close to knowing what I want to put together, and I've gotten a few components and prices from PLE's website. Not necessarily going to buy from there, but they are only a 5 minute drive away which is appealing. So these are the components I am deciding between: CPU Intel Core 2 Q8400 2.66GHz 2x2MB Cache 1333FSB $279.00 Intel Core 2 Q9400 2.6GHz 2x3MB Cache 1333FSB $334.00 Intel Core 2 Q9550 2.83GHz 2x6MB Cache 1333FSB $399.00 I definitely want Quad-Core. I really don't want to take any shortcuts on this system like I did my last, so I am not going to bother Dual Core. Out of these three, is the added cache going to make a HUGE difference to performance (i.e. worth $400?) MOTHERBOARD ASUS STRIKER II EXTREME 790i DESKTOP BOARD# $429.00 I've only figured out one motherboard that I want so far. But if anyone has any alternatives this would be appreciated. But it needs to support SLI (as I would like to have this option available to me). Also socket 775 obviously (probably going with an NVIDIA chipset as well). RAM: Do I want 6GB or is 3/4 enough? GFX CARD ASUS 9500GT 550M PCIe/512MB/D-DVI # [EN9500GT-MG-DI-512 ] $109.00 ASUS 9600GT PCIe/512MB/D-DVI # [EN9600GT-HTDI-512] $168.00 ASUS 9800GT 600M PCIe/512MB/D-DVI # [EN9800GTHB-HTDI-512] $215.00 eVGA GTX260+ 576M/1998M 896MB/D-DVI # [896-P3-1255-AR ] $399.00 eVGA GTX275 663M/2268M 896MB/D-DVI # [896-P3-1170-AR] $479.00 ASUS GTX285 648M PCIe/1GB/DVI/HDMI # [ENGTX285/HTDP/1GD3] $669.00 Case, power supply etc I will decide for myself (probably getting a 1000W PSU given the trivial price differences between 750, 850 and 1000). So any advice would be appreciated! | | Thursday, May 7th, 2009 | | 11:59 pm |

Well as expected today was largely uneventful. Returned the car and spent the rest of it at the beach - even though it ended up raining. It was actually pretty cool because it was of course light tropical rain so it was very warm. I also bec obssesed with this entire colony of crabs that seemed to be living on the rock wall that separates the inner beach from the greater ocean. Not much else to say! I am uncertain about Internet access from here on. Tomorrow we leave for Sydney and the day after that, I fly home! It's been fun. | | Friday, January 9th, 2009 | | 10:27 pm |

Today we went for a drive to the Kualoa Ranch, where my dad and I went on a quad bike tour of the valley within the 4000 acre property. It was so much fun, and is easily the most beautiful place I have ever been to. To give you an idea of where we were, the area was used as the filming location for the first parts Jurassic Park, before everything goes to shit (among many other films). Rest of the day was spent doing not much, except getting lost and turning a 5 minute car trip to the nearest supermarket into a 35 minute lose-fest. I am so embarrassed at my failure. Tomorrow is our last full day in Hawaii, but I think we will be spending it on the beach (since we have to give the car back). | | Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | | 10:49 pm |

Today we got up very early to go on a tour of Pearl Harbour, specifically to see the USS Arizona. It was quite interesting, and informative, given that I didn't actually know much of the specifics of the attack on Pearl Harbour (although, I guess a Wiki trawl would've sufficed, but being there was more interesting!). Rest of the day was spent relaxing on the beach and we had a very nice dinner for my mum's birthday. Holiday is very quickly coming to an end - I am not sure what else we have in store, although tomorrow is the last full day we have the car, so we'll see what happens! | | Sunday, January 4th, 2009 | | 9:21 pm |

Pretty meh day. Went shopping and bought some screwdrivers so I could fiddle with my problematic Sega CD, which is now entirely dead. :( I am annoyed it is broken, and I am annoyed I wasted the afternoon. Also my brother is really sick (food poisoning I think) so I feel sorry for him. However, it meant that my mum and I went out and had dinner together and it was nice. Hopefully tomorrow will be more fun than today. | | Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 | | 10:59 pm |

Did almost nothing day - just lazed on the beach. It was wonderful, although the weather went a bit crappy this afternoon. Had dinner and then walked around for while and then came back to the hotel to find Die Hard 3 on. | | Sunday, December 28th, 2008 | | 7:28 pm |

Went to Disneyland with the family again. It's really not as good for me now as it was when I was young. I don't hate it, but I don't exactly love it either. Felt really sleepy this afternoon, came back to the hotel at about 4pm and slept. Pretty meh day - aside from driving the Mustang again to get dinner. Whee! | | Friday, December 26th, 2008 | | 4:43 pm |

We hired a car today, and due to mass shortages of rentals our only choice was a FORD MUSTANG GT CONVERTIBLE. I DROVE AN AMERICAN V8 MUSCLE CAR IN LOS ANGELES. This is one of those lifetime check-boxes I can tick off. We have it for another FOUR days as well (have to share with my dad unfortunately though - he gets to drive it tomorrow). Slept in today until midday, and then went to Disneyland. I guess it's alright, just doesn't have the same sort of affect on me as when I was young. We have five days worth of tickets but I doubt I will go there for more than two. That said, today got cut short though due to HEAVY rain (we were the middle of a car ride when we got soaked, which was hilarious until I started shivering....and trudging back to the hotel was NOT fun!). I guess I will just go on all the ridiculous rollercoasters until I get bored. I suspect once we have a car I will be out and about exploring. Not much else to report - I got yet another Jeremy Clarkson book for xmasx, so I have something to read when I am on the toilet. We'll be going out to dinner latter, hopefully things won't go wrong this time! | | Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 | | 8:16 pm |

Today we went to Arlington National Cemetary, which was quite a solem experience - perhaps even a little overwhelming. I couldn't bring myself to take any photos because I felt that would be turning it into a tourist experience, which I don't feel that it is (and in a way, I resented people around me who were taking photos, and talking loudly etc.) That was all for today, we went shopping at some generic mall which was nice because it was warm but boring because it was well....a mall. Today was our last day in Washington D.C. and we are flying back to Los Angeles tomorrow (assuming the weather doesn't stop us). | | Sunday, December 21st, 2008 | | 7:41 pm |

So much for taking it easy today! Saw quite a lot today. Started off with the Washington Monument, which was great - largely because there was a lift you could take to the top of the inside of monument, allowing for a spectaular view of the city. Speaking of which, the city is a little sterile, but is architecturally impressive. We then walked towards the Lincoln Monument along the reflective pool, where I essentially played Pokemon Snap with the squirrels. SQUIRRELS ARE TOO CUTE. I DON'T CARE IF THEY ARE RODENTS. The Lincoln Monument was great, much bigger than I thought. There were various speeches of his inscribed on the interior. We then had lunch, and walked to the White House, which was tighly secured at the rear but we walked around and got a closer view of the front of the building (which was still heavily secured). Unfortunately were unable to go on a tour of the building (although we already knew this in advance). This doesn't sound like much, but this filled an entire day. Oh, we went to a grocery store where they have one of those self service counters. It was so retarded and glitched several times. Tomorrow will hopefully involve Capitol Hill and Arlington Cemetary. | | Saturday, December 20th, 2008 | | 9:13 pm |

We are taking D.C. at a more relaxed pace, so the only thing we did today was the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, which I loved. Rest of the day was spent lazing in hotel room, cursing the less than stellar wireless performance of our hotel (I am in the joke of a "business centre" on a Windows 2000 machine). I am not sure what we are up to tomorrow, but I would like to see the White House and then walk to Capitol Hill. | | Friday, December 19th, 2008 | | 9:00 pm |
Friday, December 19th 2008 - Washington D.C.
Arrived in Washington D.C. via train, which wasn't as bad as I thought. Didn't do any sightseeing today and have just lounged around the hotel (although the White House and Capitol Hill looked very impressive on the way in. The White House, the Smithsonian and Capitol Hill are only about 2km away from our hotel and the Air & Space Museum is about 250 metres away so most stuff is easy to get to. For the first time we have free internet access, however the wireless signal isn't strong enough so once again I have to borrow my brother's computer instead of being able to use my iPod Touch. :( Washington D.C. was my main interest on this trip, so I hope it is exciting! | | Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 | | 10:57 pm |

Today was a bit less involved, but the most significant thing was going to the top of the Empire State building. It was expensive ($20US/head) but entirely worth it. The view was amazing, but I am sick of my camera being so shit. I hope SOME of my photos turned out well. (LOL, there are two random porn channels on the cable TV, but I can never remember where they are so its like "info-mercial, sitcom, ANAL SEX, TRANSVESTITE, rodeo, Foxnews". By the way, Fox was having a COUNTDOWN OF 2008'S TOP WEATHER EVENTS. They must be scratching for material. Anyway, the rest of the day was pretty non-event. We organised tickets for a train to Washington DC which makes me angry because it is a stupid idea and I predict we will have problems. WHY CAN'T WE JUST TAKE A FUCKING PLANE?!?!? Then my mum went to various boring shops to satisfy her curiosities and that was about it. Oh and someone got shot two blocks away. I believe tomorrow is our last full day in NYC - hopefully we will go see the Statue of Liberty this time!!! | | Saturday, December 13th, 2008 | | 1:15 pm |
December 13th 2008 - Los Angeles
I haven't slept for almost a day, but I am determined to get my sleep cycle in sync with the US. Flight was shorter than expected (~12.5 hours) and largely tolerable, with the exception of the douchebag behind me who decided to close his tray with the force of Thor EVERY 5 MINUTES. And guess what? We have YET MORE FLYING in store for us tomorrow as we fly from LA to New York. P.S. Nathan - if I want to send you an email is to your gmail addy? |
